Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

The Famous Berry Woodfired Sourdough Bakery - New South Wales - Fabulous!

Woodfired bakeries are truly as scarce as hen's teeth. Remember all the caravanners who used to queue up at Karuah just north of Nelsons Bay in the good old days before it closed. This bakery in Berry on the South Coast of NSW, is in a fantastic old building and the goodies produced all have a most unique flavour and texture. The atmosphere in the shop is amazing. Most products sold are also organic adding to the health benefits - an excuse to eat more treats! For those not in the know sourdough bread is the original bread recipe made long before yeast was invented.

We were in the area for several days mainly with the CMCA Sydney Wanderers - a fantastic group. Yes we got stuck in a bit of a rut and stuck with "Snails" and sourdough bread - great with Tasmanian Ploughmans cheese - which we just happened to have onboard! Yes, it is not the cheapest in town, but in our view is definitely the best! The three items above came in at $8.50.

Pictured above is the famous woodfired oven. Pictured at right is the range of organic vegetables available Wednesday to Sunday. Of course Saturdays and Sundays are the really busy days as Berry is invaded by all the city folk.

The sign above left is the only one on the building and it is easily missed. Just look for a white washed old style two storey building at 23 Prince Alfred Street, Berry.

A recent addition is the "coffee lounge" along the front of the building - extremely popular on weekends. This photo was taken on a windy, rainy Saturday yet they still had lots of customers.

Absolutely and totally recommended!
