Security Grills to Suit Hehr Screen Doors

Winnebago for reasons not understood by owners persist in using the expensive Hehr doors on all models except the entry level Freeway. They are a great looking door, but they just aren't practical for use in our hot, steamy climate. The Camec Triple Lock doors have an excellent security screen and you can sleep in reasonable safety with just the security door locked. Another huge advantage of the Camec is it is wider allowing easy removal of the refrigerator - impossible with the Hehr. The photos below were taken at the planning meeting for the May 2003 CMCA Casino Rally. Both are work-arounds to solve the problem. Des Lee from New England has placed a piece of grill on the outside of the fly screen and pop rivetted it to the aluminium frame. A double sided keyed lock has been placed near the normal lock. (photo on the left). "Smokey" from the Banana Benders has taken a slightly different approach. The photo (at right) really doesn't do his design justice as he has fitted aluminium channel to all edges near the sliding shutter. The only drawback with this design is you can't easily replace the gauze. The big advantage is it's safer in the event of fire etc. To get out you simply lift up three "U" pieces. It is slightly stronger than Des's version however it should be remembered that either door would not resist jemmying for long. Des and Smokey don't have email so if you have any enquiries we suggest you look them up at Casino.

However all is not lost! Lots of CMCA members put their thinking caps on when Vince Moran was attacked in a rest area bang in the middle of Kempsey in December 2002. His Hehr door did not fail, but was practically bent in half and both front windows smashed. Terry Childs has come up with a triple lock replacement door using Crim Safe mesh. This simply fits in place of the existing screen door. Winnebago have come to the party and are fitting it on a Concept Motorhome which will be displayed at the CMCA Casino Rally in May 2003 and will be "loaned" to chapters for the following 8 months. The emphasis on this vehicle will be on personal safety. It will also have several alarms and warning lamps to tell you if you have forgotten to wind down the aerial on retracted the steps. The vehicle will be on display in the Trades Area at Casino. (near the lake)
