This excellent campsite is buried deep away in the mountains just about bang in the centre of Tasmania. You can use the all bitumen from the north Longford/Poatina road, provided you aren't put off by long steep hills - continuous that is! We have only been down this little beauty and can accurately comment on just how hot your vehicle's brakes can get! Another all bitumen route from the south is from Hobart via Bothwell. We came the more adventurous way up from Oatlands via Interlaken on just about all dirt, but extremely scenic. It would probably be best not to come this way though if you are towing anything. |

| You
need to watch your navigating here, as there are three turn offs into Arthur's
Lake. As is the norm for us, we took the first one and soon realised that a "U
Turn" was needed! Bob's middle names by the way are "U Turn" and
Hav-a-chat"! Pumphouse is the middle one and you only go in about a kilometre.
Please don't be disappointed view wise when you first arrive as you are "confronted"
with a hydro pumphouse. The real beauty is hidden just around the corner. The
campsite proper is the first turn off to the left and it is certainly not clearly
marked. One can easily get confused at this point as it has a large sign "No
Camping"! However you leave all this behind you in a few hundred metres and
the campsite itself is very, very pretty. The only blot on the scene are the dreaded
high tension wires, but we understand the necessity of these. |

| If
nothing else we try to keep this site very honest and "real life" so
the nastiest picture is shown below. There are large overhead wires around the
campsite, but these don't intrude into the camping area itself. Besides, the site
and all the facilities are really top class. The amenities here are excellent
considering the low price of $3.30 PPPN. Have a look at the shower photo. We found
it hard to believe we were staying virtually in a bush camp, yet here we were
provided with absolutely spotless amenities that really were impossible to fault.
Now the showers all work on a wood fire and there is something magic in seeing
the smoke wisp skywards from the amenities block. The building just fits the setting
perfectly as they are beautifully made from logs all with natural finish. |

| This
is an exceptionally social camp. We loved the way all the BBQs are grouped and
meal time is a real delight. There is a resident very hard working caretaker -
extremely friendly too. All sites have a nice fireplace and yes folks wood is
supplied free. The interaction between all the campers was lovely - everyone comparing
notes where they had been and where they were going. Our visit was before the
2004 CMCA Quercus Park rally so there was also the anticipation of the forthcoming
rally. This is one of the most wonderful things about camping - the new friends
you make and the information you share. |

| This is a very popular site with motorhomers as it suits all size rigs, is generally fairly level for parking, lots of good grass even though we were not there in a good season, doggie friendly, great fishing, easy boat access with swimming in summer - this year we are told summer only lasted two days and yes we missed it! We have nothing but praise for Hydro Tasmania for provided so many of these wonderful camps and even stocking some of the lakes. Wonderful stuff! Similarly the caretaker at Pumphouse should receive some sort of award from Tourism Tasmania for the efforts made well beyond the call of duty. Absolutely recommended! Hema 55 J 9 |
