Around-Oz: Living the Dream!

Lake Coolmunda - Darling Downs

This is definitely our kind of park! Lovely owners, laid back, super quiet, wonderful surroundings, keenly priced and course extremely doggie friendly. Not a notice full of regulations in sight! We stumbled across it on a CMCA Safari to Millmeran last year and made a mental note to return. Well we have! Unlike NSW, most water supply areas in Queensland are totally free to visit and the caravan park is just 2 kms from the lake. The park is off the Cunningham Highway on the way from Brisbane to Goodiwindi and is 13 klms east of Inglewood.

Now the park is not right on the water, however you do get the most delightful lake views from any point in the park. The highlight for anyone visiting would have to be the resident peacocks. They arrive from 4 oclock and parade around the grounds much to everyones delight. A word of warning though - don't park under the big ironbark tree as this is their sleeping spot. You could get poo-ed on!

Water is bore with a slight smell, so best to boil or bring your own. TV reception using "The Dome" from Ian at Solar Panel Xpress was superb on 7, 10 and SBS and just watchable on Channel 2 and 9. Phones a bit patchy with CDMA with 3 bars, GSM with 1 bar and very unreliable. Data worked fine on CDMA at 19.2. We found the amenities to be nice and clean, but if you have children with you watch out if they shower on their own, as the hot water taps are on the right for some unknown reason (maybe a left handed plumber?). Rather cute laundry with one machine, but lots of line space. We loved the under cover BBQ area with free gas - very rustic and quite popular around Happy Hour!

The grounds are very well kept and there is a nice pool and tennis court. Big rigs could fit OK in quiet times and when busy the road verges are available. You get to camp wherever you like on really large, level and grassy sites. The park is laid out so that you park with your annex looking straight at the beautiful ever so restful view. Noise wise - it is right on the railway line! During our stay there was only two trains a day BUT they do blow their whistles as the park is adjacent to a level crossing. The highway is about 1/2 km away so there is a tiny bit of background noise at night. We had no trouble at all with noise overall and would rate this park very highly in this area.

The powered sites are well spread out and you sort of go where you like. Each pole has a tap and sullage but don't forget this is not drinking water. Some sites have shade however being heavily into solar we seldom worry about shade! Walking wise the actually dam reserve is a 4 kms return walk along the road. Talking about walking the nearest shop is an easy walk back towards Inglewood. Papers, basic food, restaurant etc. as well as BP fuel.

Once parked you can stay here a few days without moving unless you wish to go sight seeing. Nearest larger shops back at delightful Inglewood - 13 kms. Suggest you take your bikes there as excellent bike tracks abound in lovely shady surroundings.

Very reasonable costs in May 2003 - $15.50 powered and $13.50 unpowered. Contact details are Peter and Jenny Herbert on phone/fax (07) 4652 4171. Remember it's people who make places and the management here bend over backwards to make your stay a memorable experience. We will definitely be back on our way to the proposed CMCA rally at Goondiwindi in September 2004. We absolutely recommend this wonderful little oasis in the country!

TIP: Fill up with town water before arriving at the park - Inglewood is just 13 kms west - lots of taps along the concrete walkway.
